A Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) is a type of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) used by individuals with diabetes to track blood glucose levels in real time. It consists of a small sensor placed under the skin, typically on the arm or abdomen, which measures glucose levels in interstitial fluid. The sensor transmits data to a receiver or smartphone, providing continuous monitoring without frequent fingerstick tests.

Key Features of a CGM as DME:
  1. Long-Term Use – CGMs are designed for ongoing, daily use, making them durable rather than disposable.

  2. Medical Necessity – CGMs are prescribed by healthcare providers for diabetes management, making them eligible for insurance coverage under DME benefits.

  3. Reusable Components – While sensors need periodic replacement, transmitters and receivers are reusable, aligning with DME classification.

  4. Improved Diabetes Management – Helps users maintain stable blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of complications.

Examples of CGM Devices:
  • Dexcom G7

  • Freestyle Libre 3

If the patient meets medical necessity criteria, CGMs are often covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance plans under DME benefits.

Sego Med Supply made my diabetes management so much easier with their reliable glucose monitors. Their service is exceptional and truly caring for patients like me.
